Leicester's Only Private Clinic Offering DEXA & InBody Scans Onsite

At The Health Suite Leicester, we offer private DEXA bone density scanning on a GE Lunar iDXA, with Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) included as standard for a fuller picture of bone quality and fracture risk. You can add a vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) to check for spinal fractures that often cause no symptoms, or book a DEXA body composition scan on its own. The scan is non-invasive, you stay clothed, and there is free on-site parking. You do not need a GP referral: you can request a scan directly, and our doctors triage your request and arrange the scan if clinically appropriate. Every scan is reported by a consultant radiologist, and if your results show you need treatment, our in-house rheumatology service can see you without a new referral. We scan adults aged 18 and over only.

Get your DEXA bone density scan on-site in Leicester at The Health Suite. Our in-house scanning facilities allow you to have your assessment locally, without being referred to another centre or travelling outside Leicester.

What your scan measures

  1. T-score:  Your bone density compared with a healthy young adult. This is the number used to diagnose osteoporosis and osteopenia.
  2. Z-score: Your bone density compared with others of your own age and sex. Useful for identifying bone loss that has a cause beyond ageing.
  3. Trabecular Bone Score (TBS): A measure of bone quality rather than quantity.
  4. Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) (Optional): A low-dose side view of the spine, taken at the same appointment, that checks for compression fractures of the vertebrae. Many of these cause no pain and go unnoticed. Finding one changes your fracture risk and can change whether treatment is recommended.

Two people can have the same T-score and very different fracture risk, because bone strength depends on internal structure as well as density. TBS looks at the texture of the bone within the spine and adds that information to the picture. It is not routinely available at most private scanning services, and it changes management in a meaningful number of cases – particularly in people with diabetes, where standard bone density can look reassuring while fracture risk is elevated.

How booking works

  1. Choose your scan and book

Book online or call us on 0116 241 0010. Our scans are for adults aged 18 and over.

  2. Complete your health questionnaire

We email you a short online questionnaire about your health, medicines and any previous fractures or scans. It also asks for your GP’s details, so we can send them a copy of your report if you agree. Please complete it as soon as you can.

  3. Doctor review

UK regulations require every X-ray examination to be requested by a registered clinician. One of our doctors reviews your questionnaire and makes the referral, so you do not need to see your GP first. If the scan, or a VFA, is not appropriate for you, we will contact you and refund the cost in full. Payment is only taken once your scan is approved.

  4. Confirmation

Once your scan is approved, we send your appointment confirmation with preparation instructions. Cancellations less than 24 hours before your appointment are not refunded.

  5. Referring a patient?

Doctors can refer a patient using our DEXA referral form. Every referral is checked against our referral guidelines before the scan is booked.

Physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and other healthcare professionals: please ask your patient to book directly and give them a letter with your clinical findings. Our doctor will review it alongside their health questionnaire and make the referral. With the patient’s consent, we can send you a copy of the report.

What happens after your scan

  1. A recommended interval for repeat scanning

Change over time can only be measured accurately on the same scanner. We can compare future scans with your first scan here, but we cannot directly compare our results with scans done on other machines, including NHS scans.

  2. A discussion of lifestyle, nutritional and medication factors

Relevant to your result, either at a GP results consultation (£75) or with your own GP if you would prefer to continue your care there.

  3. An appointment with our rheumatology service

Available at the same clinic if a specialist assessment of your bone health would be appropriate. You would not need a new referral or a further scan to be seen.

  4. A copy of your report for your NHS GP

Sent to your GP if you agreed to this on your health questionnaire, so your existing care is informed by the result.

What we treat

  • Osteoporosis & Advanced Bone Loss Detection

We test for osteoporosis by measuring bone mineral density at the hip and lumbar spine. This scan identifies significant bone loss early so your clinician can implement targeted medical management to strengthen your bones and prevent future fractures.

  • Osteopenia & Early Bone Thinning Detection

Early bone loss happens silently without symptoms. Our DEXA scan can detects osteopenia before a fracture occurs, allowing you and your doctor to take proactive nutritional, lifestyle, or therapeutic steps to preserve bone density.

  • Bone Quality & Micro-Architecture Assessment (TBS)

Bone strength relies on quality as well as quantity. Using Trabecular Bone Score (TBS), our test measures the internal texture of the spine. This reveals hidden fracture risks that standard scans miss, particularly in individuals with conditions like diabetes.

  • Medication-Induced Bone Depletion Monitoring

Treatments like long-term oral steroids, aromatase inhibitors, prostate therapies, or GLP-1 weight loss drugs can thin bones. Our scan tests baseline bone strength and monitors changes over time to ensure your skeletal health stays protected during care.

  • Malabsorption & Risk Factor Evaluation

Conditions such as coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or low body weight limit nutrient absorption and weaken bones. This diagnostic test evaluates the impact of underlying medical conditions on your skeletal system to guide follow-up care.

  • many more

Our clinicians manage a broad spectrum of conditions, and individual assessment allows us to tailor care beyond the examples listed. We encourage you to book a consultation to discuss your symptoms and appropriate treatment options.

Checklist

Symptom checker

  • Have you broken a bone following a minor fall or low-impact trip?

Sustaining a fracture from a minor bump or fall is often the first warning sign of osteoporosis, as bone loss occurs silently without pain until a fracture happens.

  • Are you a post-menopausal woman, particularly if menopause occurred before age 45?

Oestrogen levels drop significantly during and after menopause, leading to rapid bone loss that makes a baseline DEXA diagnostic scan essential for fracture prevention.

  • Have you been prescribed long-term oral steroids, cancer therapies, or GLP-1 weight loss medications?

Certain medications accelerate bone thinning or muscle loss, making regular bone density and Trabecular Bone Score testing vital to monitoring skeletal strength.

  • Do you have a family history of hip fractures or osteoporosis?

Genetics strongly influence peak bone mass and fracture risk. Having a parent who fractured a hip increases your personal likelihood of early bone thinning.

  • Have you lost height, or developed a curved upper back?

Height loss can be a sign of vertebral fractures, which often cause no pain. A DEXA scan with vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) checks for them.

  • Are you considering, currently taking, or planning to stop Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

HRT significantly influences bone retention. A DEXA test provides objective baseline data to guide decisions on starting, monitoring, or discontinuing hormonal therapies.

Your Health, Our Priority.

Why choose The Health Suite for DEXA Bone Density Scan

  • Advanced Diagnostic Technology (GE Lunar iDXA & TBS)

Our test measures both bone density (quantity) and internal micro-architecture (quality) using Trabecular Bone Score (TBS), uncovering fracture risk that bone density alone can miss, with optional vertebral fracture assessment.

  • Consultant Radiologist Reporting

Every scan is individually examined and reported by a consultant radiologist. Your scan printout and report are sent to you securely, and a THS doctor is available to explain them at a results consultation.

  • Direct Access & In-House Onward Care

You can request a scan directly without a GP referral; our doctors triage and arrange the scan if clinically appropriate. If your test reveals bone loss, you have seamless access to our in-house Rheumatology, GP, and wellness services under one roof.
